How can you plan a wedding with a Navy Sailor?
Hi. My fiance and I are planning on getting married in October of 2013. We decided around that time since it would be easier to plan everything, but something has been floating about my brain. How do you plan a wedding around deployments? I mean, I don’t want to set a date, hand out the invitations, get everything reserved only to have him leave for his deployment a week beforehand. (That would really suck.) So, is there a way around that, or should I just chance it? Or is there a way for my fiance to “take off” (per say) for the wedding? Any answers will help. Thanks.
Do like most military couples do, and have the simplest wedding possible at the courthouse. Invite only your immediate family and witnesses, wear a simple dress from a regular store, and go for a nice restaurant meal or cake & champagne at your house afterwards. A wedding is one day, marriage is a lifetime. In 50 years, neither of you will care that there was no DJ or centerpieces.
If you are really pressed for time and can’t even plan a small wedding, just go to the courthouse to sign the papers, and have a big wedding in a few years when the time is right. As I have learned here, do-overs that are otherwise considered tacky are apparently acceptable for military couples who had to marry quickly because of deployment.
